Soil improvement is currently a major emphasis at Afternoon Zephyr Farm. In 2006 Kent and his wife, Hueylee, moved to their farm near Rogue River, Oregon and began removing overgrown Christmas trees to make room for a place to grow garlic and other food.
The garlic culture has proven very helpful in enriching the soil. We plant with compost and mulch with leaves and straw. The organic matter and garlic roots work wonders on the soil structure and biology.
We believe in natural, sustainable farming and have become Certified Naturally Grown. We work to produce nutrient dense food using soil balancing by the Albrecht method and Korean Natural Farming methods originated by Han Kyu Cho. Kent wrote an article in "In Good Tilth" magazine July/August 2010 issue about Natural Farming.
Our climate is "Mediterranean". This climate favors softnecks but we have some hardneck varieties that do very well with the warm winters. We have over 20 cultivars of garlic but sell only those that do well for us and that we think will do well for you.
Our work with the soil and the climate makes our garlic a good choice for either planting in most of the country or eating in all of it. Please give it a try, you'll like it so much you won't want to go back to common white garlic ever again
