Vanderpool Gourmet Gardens

Terry Vanderpool is a third generation Texas farmer but his farming on his own started later in life. The whole family participates in the farming activities, though Terry's wife, Sinda, has a full time job at Baylor University. The children are a big part of our operation as you can see from our photos.

Part of getting back into farming was so that the family could be together, work together on a sustainable and healthy project and provide good strong garlic to our customers so that they can grow and enjoy all the wonderful diversity in the garlic universe. Our purpose is to provide locally and sustainably grown premium rare and gourmet garlic using organic methods. We are Certified Naturally Grown.

We looked long and hard for detailed data on the best garlic cultivars and best growing methods for garlic in Texas and naturally contacted Texas A & M. Well, to our great surprise they had not done much in the way of studying gourmet garlic so we partnered with them and are scientifically testing over 50 varieties of gourmet garlic, more than anyone else grows in the state of Texas.

We hope this is the beginning of a long term study of garlic growing in the south. With the assistance of Bob Anderson, the Garlicmeister, himself and the Texas Master Gardeners, we are establishing a Texas garlic library to preserve rare and historical garlic varieties.

We love garlic for all of its wonderful characteristics like thriving in difficult conditions, bringing a wealth of health benefits to those of us who eat it on a regular basis, and of course for its amazing flavor in all sorts of dishes and on its own. We eat lots of garlic. We like fried garlic, sauteed garlic, garlic pesto, garlic gombo, garlic stew, garlic potatoes, whole garlic, raw garlic, garlic duck, garlic chicken, garlic stuffed roast, green garlic, fresh garlic, pickled garlic, and we are trying it in new dishes all the time.

We are working especially hard to increase the growing stock of the creole varieties since they grow well in the south and are in critically short supply. This year looks like we will have a reasonable supply of Burgundy and Ajo Rojo, but order early, since they sell out early. In the future we hope to have good supplies of many more of the creole varieties, like the extremely rare Rose de Lautrec, Germinador, Cuban Purple, Guatamalan, and many others. So, eat garlic every day and long live all those who love garlic!

Certified Naturally Grown.

How to buy from us:

Scroll down and select the number of pounds you want and click on "Add to Cart" on all those you want to buy.

>Order now for shipment in late summer/early fall 2012.

The garlic prices range from $16 to $24 per pound plus shipping and handling charges of $10 for the first pound, $2 for each of the next three pounds and $1 extra for each additional pound over that and we ship via U. S. Postal Service, Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation, to make sure you get your package. Our S & H charge is a weighted national average so that all buyers pay the same S & H regardless of distance from grower. These S & H fees apply to each grower you buy from.

This Farmers market is like your local farmers market.

When using your credit/debit card to buy direct from different growers, a separate order is required for each grower. You may buy as many different kinds of garlic as you want from any grower on any order but each grower requires a separate credit card transaction so that S & H charges may be properly calculated. If you want to order garlic from more than one grower, a separate payment must be made to each grower because they are independant businesses in different places.

For those who don't want to take the time to place a separate order with each grower, we will do it for you if you wish but there will be a service fee. Just order what you want from as many growers as you want on a single order and when we process the order we will charge your card the necessary additional S & H charges plus a service fee of $10.00 for each separate grower involved - there's lot of clerical work involved.

Beautiful Silverskin garlics.

Mild French from Vanderpool Gourmet Gardens

Mild French came from Porter and Sons Nursery in Stephenville, Texas who grew it and sold it through their catalog for years so it has a history of having been successfully grown in moderate winter areas. This is likely the fabled "Texas White" that no one has seen for decades. Porter and Sons are gone now and it is time to bring their garlic back to Texas and my crop of it is growing well this year and I expect to harvest some nice large clean healthy bulbs. It should grow well over most of the south but "iffy" along the gulf coast.

As with many silverskins its bulb wrappers are thick and creamy white. The cloves; however, are a beautiful mahogony color with elongated tips. Bulbs can become large for a silverskin and contain 15 or more cloves.

Mild French makes an excellent braider and has a taste as bold as its looks. It has the full flavored musky character typical of Silverskins yet with only moderate pungency (hotness) during the fall and winter but as time passes it gets hotter so that in the spring it is quite hot and strong.

Silverskins are the last garlics to mature and be harvested (July to August even in the south) and Mild French is one of the first Silverskins to be harvested. Growing late harvesting, long storing silverskins as well as early harvesting, shorter storing Artichokes, Asiatics or Turbans may mean you never run out of good garlic.

Picture of a Turban garlic.

Shandong (Hardneck Turban garlic) from Vanderpool Gourmet Gardens

Shandong is another beautiful Turban garlic with a rich garlicky flavor that has a robust pungency that you notice immediately upon biting into Shandong raw - instant fiery hotness that builds to a crescendo in about 40 seconds, levels out and slowly dissipates leaving you warm and breathless.

Turbans are among the very earliest harvesting garlics and store until mid-November or longer and need to be planted early in the fall.
If you grow these you'll have garlic before anyone else and if you also grow a long storing kind, like Ajo Rojo or Mild French, you may never run out of good garlic.

Grows well in most of the USA.

Important notes for credit/debit card users:

This Farmers market is like your local farmers market.

When using your credit/debit card to buy direct from different growers, a separate order is required for each grower. You may buy as many different kinds of garlic as you want from any grower on any order but each grower requires a separate credit card transaction so that S & H charges may be properly calculated. If you want to order garlic from more than one grower, a separate payment must be made to each grower because they are independant businesses in different places.

For those who don't want to take the time to place a separate order with each grower, we will do it for you if you wish. Just order what you want from as many growers as you want on a single order and when we process the order we will charge your card the necessary additional S & H charges plus a service fee of $10.00 for each separate grower involved due to the excess clerical work entailed.

If you buy from a grower and later cancel that order for any reason, the credit card processing gateway still charges Gourmet Garlic Gardens the full processing fee plus an additional fee of the same amount for processing the cancellation and also it places an additional clerical burden on us so, regretably, we must charge a 15% cancellation fee when processing the cancellation because that's about what it costs us. My advice is to look around among the various growers and decide what to buy from whom and then place your orders and stick with the growers you have chosen.

How Our Garlics are Grown

All the garlic for sale in our online farmers market was grown without the use of petrochemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers; only natural and non-toxic fertilizers and pest control methods are used.

Some of our growers are Certified Organic and some are Certified Naturally Grown, which we regard as equal to Certified Organic in every meaningful way but without all the bureaucratic entanglements. All our farmers market growers grow organically and some are Certified Organic but not all want to be certified Organic because of the paperwork and reporting requirements and are among the best available sources of sustainable/ organic Garlic and they become Certified Naturally Grown, where the regulation comes from their fellow members rather than a federal bureacracy.

We do not allow growers who use synthetic petroleum-based fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides to participate in our farmers market.

All garlic in our farmers market is grown in the USA, no imports allowed.
This farmers market is strictly for small-scale American market gardeners/growers who live and grow sustainably.
