Eric Hickey

My name is Eric Hickey, otherwise known as "The Garlic Man", nestled in the beautiful Finger Lakes region of New York, two and a half Hours drive south of Rochester. We started growing garlic a few years ago and got our Music (Porcelain) seedstock from a local gentleman who had been growing it for over 30 years. Our Purple Italian (Rocambole) came from a very conscientious local Amish grower. We have been very selective in our planting stock and will also have some German White available.

We grow sustainably and would never even consider putting any petrochemical fertilizers or pesticides on our gardens - It's our land and our food, why would we use harmful chemicals on it?

We hope you will enjoy being part of our family venture and make us a regular part of your family's food supply and enjoy some great NY gourmet garlic. It's always good to know for sure where your food comes from - from our home to yours.

How to buy from us:

Scroll down and select the number of pounds you want and click on "Add to Cart" on all those you want to buy.

Order now for shipment in late summer/early fall 2012.

The garlic prices range from $16 to $24 per pound plus shipping and handling charges of $10 for the first pound, $2 for each of the next three pounds and $1 extra for each additional pound over that and we ship via U. S. Postal Service, Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation, to make sure you get your package. Our S & H charge is a weighted national average so that all buyers pay the same S & H regardless of distance from grower. These S & H fees apply to each grower you buy from.

This Farmers market is like your local farmers market.

When using your credit/debit card to buy direct from different growers, a separate order is required for each grower. You may buy as many different kinds of garlic as you want from any grower on any order but each grower requires a separate credit card transaction so that S & H charges may be properly calculated. If you want to order garlic from more than one grower, a separate payment must be made to each grower because they are independant businesses in different places.

For those who don't want to take the time to place a separate order with each grower, we will do it for you if you wish. Just order what you want from as many growers as you want on a single order and when we process the order we will charge your card the necessary additional S & H charges plus a service fee of $10.00 for each separate grower involved - there's lot of clerical work involved.

Stylized caricature of a garlic plant.
Picture of beautiful Porcelain garlics.

German White (cold winter hardneck Porcelain garlic) from Eric Hickey

German White is a big, robust, strong, full flavored, hardy, long storing hardneck garlic. If you grow Rocamboles or other earlier harvesting, shorter storing garlics, you should also be growing this long storing classic hardneck. Grows well in most areas of the USA but not the gulf coast or So. Cal.

Usually harvests in mid summer and stores into mid spring at room temp.

-- Sorry, sold out for 2012. --

After ordering, use your back arrow key to return to this point, otherwise the secure shopping cart will return you to Gourmet Garlic Gardens' home page.

Only one grower per order - a completely separate order is needed for each grower.

Picture of beautiful Asiatic garlics.

Japanese, an Asiatic garlic from Eric Hickey.

Typical of Asiatic garlics when bitten into raw, Japanese starts off rich with flavor but devoid of warmth, much less heat but after about 10 seconds a wave of warmth starts at the back of the mouth and spreads toward the front and intensifies as it comes on until it becomes very hot, levels off for about 30 seconds and gradually subsides into a mellow aftertaste that that makes you feel good inside and out and puts a warm smile on your face and a feeling of warm satisfaction in your soul.

As with all early harveting varieties, Japanese should be grown in conjunction with at least one long storing variety like a Creole or Porcelain or Silverskin so you may be able to have good garlic year around.

Usually harvests in early July and stores into spring at room temp.

Stylized caricature of a garlic plant.
Picture of beautiful Porcelain garlics.

Leningrad (Long storing cold winter hardneck Porcelain garlic) from Eric Hickey

Leningrad is so beautiful it could only have been designed by a artist. It has thick white luxuriant bulb wrappers which peel away to reveal beautiful purple clove covers with elongated tips almost like a Purple Stripe garlic. Even with all its eye appeal, it is the taste of Leningrad that you remember. Its flavor starts off mild and becomes very strong and robust and sticks around for a long time. I seldom get this excited about a garlic I have found but Leningrad is truly something special. I call it a Russian time bomb.

Taste Test - Wow! What a garlic! I want more!

Leningrad is a real sleeper in both taste and pungency. At first bite it is a nice smooth mellow garlic that is pleasantly relaxing and friendly with no evidence of any unpleasant heat. After 15-20 seconds the flavor begins to become more garlicky and continues to slowly increase in garlickiness. About the same time one also begins to notice a gentle pungency begining to build and over the next 30-45 seconds continues to increase in hotness until a climax of garlickiness and pungency peaks at around a minute and then subsides slowly into a rich warm aftertaste that lingers and leaves one with mouth agape and breathless. My immediate reaction was "Wow! What a garlic! I want more!"

If you grow Rocamboles or other earlier harvesting, shorter storing garlics, you should also be growing this long storing classic hardneck.

Music (cold winter hardneck Porcelain garlic) from Eric Hickey

Most Porcelain garlics are parchment white but Music is an exception and can have some nice pink color to it. Music is a beautiful very long storing garlic with a very rich garlicky flavor that is only moderately hot when eaten raw but not overly hot. Grows well in most areas of the USA but grows great in the northernmost locales.

Usually harvests in late July and stores into spring at room temp.

Important notes for credit/debit card users:

This Farmers market is like your local farmers market.

When using your credit/debit card to buy direct from different growers, a separate order is required for each grower. You may buy as many different kinds of garlic as you want from any grower on any order but each grower requires a separate credit card transaction so that S & H charges may be properly calculated. If you want to order garlic from more than one grower, a separate payment must be made to each grower because they are independant businesses in different places.

For those who don't want to take the time to place a separate order with each grower, we will do it for you if you wish. Just order what you want from as many growers as you want on a single order and when we process the order we will charge your card the necessary additional S & H charges plus a service fee of $10.00 for each separate grower involved due to the excess clerical work entailed.

If you buy from a grower and later cancel that order for any reason, the credit card processing gateway still charges Gourmet Garlic Gardens the full processing fee plus an additional fee of the same amount for processing the cancellation and also it places an additional clerical burden on us so, regretably, we must charge a 15% cancellation fee when processing the cancellation because that's about what it costs us. My advice is to look around among the various growers and decide what to buy from whom and then place your orders and stick with the growers you have chosen.

How Our Garlics are Grown

All the garlic for sale in our online farmers market was grown without the use of petrochemical pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers; only natural and non-toxic fertilizers and pest control methods are used.

Some of our growers are Certified Organic and some are Certified Naturally Grown, which we regard as equal to Certified Organic in every meaningful way but without all the bureaucratic entanglements. All our farmers market growers grow organically and some are Certified Organic but not all want to be certified Organic because of the paperwork and reporting requirements and are among the best available sources of sustainable/ organic Garlic and they become Certified Naturally Grown, where the regulation comes from their fellow members rather than a federal bureacracy.

We do not allow growers who use synthetic petroleum-based fertilizers, pesticides, fungicides or herbicides to participate in our farmers market.

All garlic in our farmers market is grown in the USA, no imports allowed.
This farmers market is strictly for small-scale American market gardeners/growers who live and grow sustainably..
